Maremma: Middle Earth

The term Maremma derives, for some scholars, from the Latin word "maritima" indicating its prolongation in a similar geographical area extended from the Tiber along the coast south to Terracina, others from Castilian "marismas" which means "swamp".

In the Divine Comedy Dante Alighieri detect their boundaries between Cecina (Livorno) and Tarquinia (Viterbo):

« Non han sì aspri sterpi né sì folti
quelle fiere selvagge che 'n odio hanno
tra Cecina e Corneto i luoghi colti.» (Inferno, XIII, 7)

As the poet Ildebrando Imberciadori said: "Strange this land Maremma...." (From: Countryside Tuscany in the eighteenth century)
